Concrete has a reputation for being cold. Spend an afternoon in a well-made concrete building and you may change your mind: few materials show light as honestly.
A plain grey wall becomes a different surface every hour. In the morning it is pale and flat; at noon, every mark of the wooden shuttering stands out in relief; at dusk it turns warm, almost pink. The building does not change. The light does, and the concrete records it.
These photographs were taken on a single walk. Notice how much of each picture is shadow, and how the shadows give the shapes their weight.
