On 20 July 1969, the lunar module of Apollo 11 touched down on the Moon. The recordings of those minutes, between the crew and mission control in Houston, are some of the most listened-to audio of the twentieth century, and as works of the United States government they are in the public domain.
This clip is the moment itself, five seconds long: the message from the surface, “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” Before it came long minutes of numbers called out, fuel warnings and short confirmations, all in voices that sound remarkably calm.
It is worth listening with headphones and your eyes closed. The quality is rough and the voices crackle, but that only makes it feel closer. NASA keeps many more of its mission recordings online for anyone to hear.
